I hope everyone enjoyed British Columbia’s first Family Day this past Monday.
Thursday was Valentine’s Day so I hope you did something special for that special someone.
Whose Valentine will you be?
There’s an ongoing debate in our nation about marriage, but our era is not the first to experience marriage under attack. During the 3rd Century, Roman Emperor Claudius II, banned marriage between young people, presumably because it was thought that married men wouldn’t make very good soldiers. Early Christians though, saw marriage as something sacred and God ordained. And so a young Roman Priest, named Valentine, secretly wed young Christian men and women in defiance of Roman law. After being imprisoned for his stand on love and marriage, Valentine was executed on February 14, 269 AD, the day we observe as Valentine’s Day.
“Being someone’s Valentine” is about a lot more than romance. If Valentine were here today, he would say that there comes a time when you’re going to have to suffer for love. If you love someone it’s not always going to be easy to maintain your commitment to each other. Romance is wonderful but don’t be surprised if the “romantic” love that you have for someone changes to something less “romantic.” But if you’re willing to suffer for your love, it will become much more mature and satisfying.
Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her… (Ephesians 5:25)
