I’ve been reading the Christmas story this week, as told in Luke’s Gospel. One thing that struck me is that when Mary and Joseph couldn’t find a room at the local Inn at Bethlehem they found shelter in a stable. Apparently it was the only other available place for Jesus to be born. Most likely the stable referred to was a small cave where livestock was kept at night. And so the Son of God entered this world in a cold, dirty, dimly lit place, surrounded by the smell and noise of farm animals. The best crib his mother could find was a feed box.
Jesus first entered into a world in a place that was the opposite of what we might expect a King to choose for a delivery room and maternity ward. But it was representative of a world hostile to the presence of God. What irony that the Saviour who came to make a way and prepare a place for us in paradise, could find no such place here. It should cause us to recognize that as His followers we shouldn’t expect to be welcome or find comfort in this world any more than He did. But we should also look forward to the invitation that Jesus gives us to abide with Him for an eternity in heaven.
And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn. (Luke 2:7)
